It is one of the most common claims in the organic wine world. Drink organic wine and you will feel better the next morning. But is there any truth to it — or is it just marketing?
WHAT CAUSES A WINE HANGOVER?
A wine hangover has multiple causes. Alcohol itself is the primary culprit — it causes dehydration, disrupts sleep, and is processed by the liver into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that causes many hangover symptoms.
Beyond alcohol, wine contains histamines (particularly in red wine), tannins, and various other compounds that can contribute to headaches and nausea in sensitive individuals. And of course, added sulphites — though as we have explored separately, the evidence that sulphites cause hangovers is weak.
WHY MIGHT ORGANIC WINE SIT EASIER?
There are a few plausible reasons why some people report feeling better after organic wine — though it is important to note this is largely anecdotal rather than clinically proven.
Organic wine has fewer additives overall. Conventional winemaking allows over 60 approved additives. Fewer additives means a simpler product that the body may process more cleanly.
Lower sulphite additions in certified organic wine may help sulphite-sensitive individuals, who can experience flushing and headaches.
Organic farming may produce grapes with better natural balance — less need for correction in the winery, which means a cleaner final product.
THE HONEST ANSWER
Organic wine will not eliminate a hangover — that is primarily a function of how much you drink. But it may sit easier for some people due to fewer additives and lower sulphite levels. And regardless of the hangover question, it is a cleaner product made with more care. Shop organic at locowines.co.uk.
