Riesling divides opinion more than almost any other grape. Some wine lovers consider it one of the world's greatest varieties. Others assume it is sweet, syrupy, or old-fashioned. Both groups are talking about completely different wines.

Here is the truth about Riesling — and why the right one will change everything.

WHERE DOES RIESLING COME FROM?

Riesling is native to Germany, where it has been cultivated in the Rhine regions for centuries. It is also grown extensively in Austria, Alsace in France, and increasingly in Australia and New Zealand.

The Hoch family grow Riesling in the Kremstal region of Austria — a cool-climate region where the grape thrives, producing wines with natural acidity, mineral precision, and vibrant fruit character.

IS RIESLING ALWAYS SWEET?

No — and this is the biggest misconception about the grape. Riesling exists across a spectrum from bone dry to very sweet. The most celebrated Rieslings from Germany and Austria are often completely dry, with high acidity and no residual sugar at all.

Rizzling, Loco Wines' organic Riesling, is dry. It is crisp, mineral, and refreshing — nothing like the off-dry German Riesling that put many people off the variety in the first place.

WHAT DOES A GOOD DRY RIESLING TASTE LIKE?

Dry Riesling is one of the most distinctive white wines in the world. Expect lemon, lime, and grapefruit — intensely citrus-driven — alongside stone fruit like peach and apricot. There is often a mineral quality, almost like wet slate, that gives the wine a clean, precise finish.

It is a wine that feels alive in the glass — high acidity, vibrant fruit, and a long refreshing finish.

RIZZLING — THE RIESLING THAT CONVERTS SCEPTICS

Rizzling is Loco Wines' certified organic, biodynamic Riesling from the Hoch family in Kremstal, Austria. Dry, aromatic, and genuinely easy to love — lemon, peach, and apricot with a mineral finish. The Riesling for people who think they do not like Riesling. Available at locowines.co.uk.
